Natural Empowerment for Girls – with Matt Casey (United Kingdom)
“The Natural Empowerment for Girls initiative aims to help build confidence, self-esteem and resilience in girls and young women. Through learning and developing outdoor skills, the programme and the setting provides opportunities for them to address the issues and pressures that impact on them the most, and share their experiences collectively. They gain a number of practical skills such as shelter building, safe fire management, tool use, and undertake creative tasks, helping to create a sense of achievement. This leads to them running all aspects of the camp by themselves, providing ownership of the sessions. Moreover, the workshops provide moments for discussion and reflection, which will cover a range of topics relevant to the issues they face as young women. Skilled staff will lead with this, and guest speakers will provide real life experience to help inspire and motivate. The forest setting provides a calm and peaceful environment. Nature creates the ambience. The elements help build the resilience, no matter what the weather.
The programme will launch with a pilot scheme over the next couple of months.”
